Holy Island Moon - Comment and photography by Karen Atkinson
As I squinted into the distance (must get my glasses fixed;) and wondered what that faint orange glow was in the distance, suddenly there was no doubt - a waning Gibbous of a fat moon, illuminating the causeway at Holy Island last night before the clouds devoured it up. What a fine birthday surprise - it made up for having been pebbledashed with sand and sea earlier at Bamburgh after trying to get closer to a bobbing seal…! Never to be forgotten.
Black Tip Reef Sharks, Borneo
(photo: Alec Connah Telford, United Kingdom First Place)
One morning at daybreak, Connah was peering into the crystal-clear water off a jetty on Borneo’s Lankayan Island when he spotted these blacktip reef sharks attempting to herd a crowd of small fish. As if in slow motion, the fish swirled around the predators, creating shapes “a bit like a kid’s kaleidoscope,” says Connah. Moments after he took this photograph, the sun rose fully, the wind came up and visibility disappeared.
